A German Youth Who Became “Half Chinese”: Marlon’s Heartwarming Journey of Cultural Exchange in China

“Ji Li Gua La?” The first time Marlon, a young man from Germany, heard this playful Chinese phrase, he was puzzled. But now, six months later, it brings a smile to his face. Thanks to the Wanderlust Exchange Program, Marlon didn’t just study Chinese culture—he lived it. What began as a journey of curiosity turned into a life-changing experience that helped him build deep connections and become a bridge between two worlds.

A New Chapter Begins: From Germany to Beijing

“This is my second time in China, but this time is different,” Marlon shared. After being accepted into the WE Program, he moved into a Chinese home in Beijing, excited and a little nervous about what was to come. Unlike his first visit, this time he wasn’t a tourist—he was part of a Chinese family.

From the moment he arrived, Marlon opened his heart to his new environment. Over the past six months, he explored some of China’s most iconic destinations, each offering a unique glimpse into the country’s rich culture and history. He strolled through the charming lanes of Gubei Water Town near Beijing, wandered the ancient streets of Xi’an, admired the snow-draped landscapes of Harbin, and soaked up the vibrant energy of Guangzhou’s local markets.

Each place left its own mark, but some memories stood out more than others.

In Xi’an, Marlon had the chance to try on a traditional hanfu, an experience that left him in awe of its intricate craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Up north in Harbin, he had a truly unexpected encounter—fresh bullfrogs at a local market! As a lifelong vegetarian, it was a moment he won't soon forget. And perhaps most meaningful of all was celebrating Chinese New Year with his host family. Immersed in the warmth, joy, and deep-rooted traditions of the Spring Festival, Marlon felt truly welcomed and at home.

Before saying goodbye, Marlon shared with WE that his journey is far from over. After his exchange ends, he plans to continue traveling through Asia—starting with Japan. And once he’s back, he’s excited to dive even deeper into discovering the many other cities China has to offer.

Learning Through Everyday Moments

One of the biggest surprises for Marlon came not from the sights he saw, but from the home he lived in. His nine-year-old host sister was full of energy and confidence—what his host parents lovingly called their “little sun.” “In Germany, families tend to be more structured and rule-based,” he reflected. “Here, love and flexibility guide everything.”

Living day to day with his Chinese family taught Marlon lessons no textbook ever could. He began to understand how different parenting styles—from Germany’s focus on independence to China’s emphasis on nurturing—both aim to raise happy, confident children. The love, laughter, and shared routines helped him feel truly at home.

His language skills also flourished. At home, he and his little host sister bonded through play, learning, and conversation—always in English. With his Chinese host mom, though, he spoke entirely in Mandarin, taking every opportunity to improve his language skills. Over time, his listening comprehension improved dramatically, and everyday interactions became some of his most valuable lessons. One day, he gave his “Chinese mom” a book about Germany. In return, she gifted him a book on Chinese culture. It was a quiet, meaningful moment—two worlds connecting through the exchange of stories and traditions. Through this immersive experience, Marlon didn’t just become part of a new family—he became a stronger communicator and a more confident version of himself.

Food was another journey all on its own. As a vegetarian, Marlon faced some initial challenges—especially when he first encountered chòu dòufu (stinky tofu). He instinctively pinched his nose and stepped back. But later, he found himself loving it “Things that seemed strange at first became comforting parts of my daily life,” he said with a grin.Mornings began with exercise on his rowing machine, followed by preparing his own breakfast. While the early breakfast hours in China and the variety of rich options felt a bit overwhelming for a vegetarian, Marlon still found a favorite: jiānbǐng—crispy, savory Chinese crepes that quickly won him over. He even joked with WE that back in Germany, Chinese Shandong pancakes are expensive, but in China, he could enjoy jiānbǐng whenever he wanted.

More Than Just a Program: A Family, A Connection

Marlon’s story is also a reflection of the support he received along the way. Whenever he had questions or needed help, the WE team was there. “The first week, I called them, and they helped right away,” he said. “Knowing I had someone to turn to made everything easier.” But the biggest impact came from the connection with his host family. He became a mentor and friend to his host litttle sister, who grew more confident through their time together. And he, in turn, grew more open, understanding, and appreciative of a culture different from his own.

Cultural Exchange: A Journey That Lasts a Lifetime

Cultural exchange is not a one-way street. It’s a shared journey. It’s about finding common ground in the small things—like helping with homework, celebrating holidays, or laughing over breakfast. Through these moments, understanding grows. Respect deepens. And friendships blossom. Marlon’s six-month journey reminds us all: the most powerful lessons come not from books, but from people. From kindness, curiosity, and connection.

WE believe cultural exchange changes lives. WE carefully match students and families, offer professional support, and create a safe, loving environment for both sides to grow. These cultural exchanges not only enrich the lives of the au pairs but also foster greater understanding and appreciation between different cultures. By immersing themselves in the daily life and traditions of their host families, they gain invaluable insights and create lasting memories. We invite you to follow along as our au pairs continue their incredible journeys across China, sharing their stories and experiences. Together, we celebrate the beauty and diversity of China, one city at a time.
